Guiyang in Southwest China's Guizhou province jointly launched a strawberry cultivation project with the Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences in March this year, according to news reports from the Guiyang bureau of agriculture and rural affairs on Dec 1.
Cooperation between the two sides was strengthened this year. The academy established a branch in the city and has signed a strategic collaboration framework contract with the city's government.
An innovative breeding platform that involves the participation of government departments, scientific institutions and related enterprises was established to tackle key technologies in fruit and vegetable planting, herb growing, fishing, and animal husbandry.
The two sides have also launched 12 cooperation projects, including a strawberry cultivation project which integrates the R&D, reproduction and cultivation of new strawberry varieties. The project has the potential to further help local strawberry growers bring in new varieties of strawberry as well as technologies, and is significant to the sustainable development of the fruit industry.
The new strawberry varieties will reportedly be richer in selenium, sweeter, and have a better taste, with a longer warranty period and higher price.
