Medics successfully carried out a caesarean section on a pregnant woman with COVID-19 at Jiangjunshan Hospital in Guizhou's provincial capital Guiyang on Sept 12.

The woman gave birth to a 2,650-gram baby boy, making her the province's first COVID-19 patient to give birth.

Before labor, Guizhou arranged a team of professionals to put forward detailed plans to ensure a successful birth and prevent infection.

The hospital carefully considered the negative pressure system in the operating room, repeatedly trained medics involved in delivery and surgery, and arranged the wards in the isolation area according to infection prevention and control measures so as to meet the emergency medical treatment needs of the pregnant woman.

The hospital also prepared formula milk powder, milk bottles, diapers, and baby wipes for the baby, and arranged a warm baby room and nurses for the whole process of nursing to ensure that the baby will be fed and cared for during his stay at the hospital.

Earlier in June, the hospital organized a training session on the emergency treatment of pregnant women infected with the novel coronavirus.

The session introduced the emergency treatment process, the latest national diagnosis and treatment standards for COVID-19 and personal protection techniques, the wearing and removing process of protective suits in wards, the emergency management of wards, emergency supplies support, and the prevention and control of hospital infection.
