Song Yan, a professor at the University of North Carolina System, delivered a speech at the 2021 Eco Forum Global's sub-forum on July 12 discussing how to tackle climate change.

The sub-forum was held in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, and was themed around "green, low-carbon and cyclic development and global ecological civilization construction".

Song said that the main challenge facing sustainable development in the next few centuries is climate change, and the key to tackling climate change is carbon.

Song believes that interdisciplinary policies should be proposed to improve environmental management and governance in urban and rural areas. Better organizing cities can help improve energy efficiency and slow down climate change.

City governance should also take into account the construction of buildings and focus on human health, Song added.
