Southwest China's Guizhou province recently honored 320 villages as "ethnic minority-style villages" and "stockade villages", eight of which are located in the provincial capital, Guiyang.

The ethnic minority-style villages and stockade villages refer to natural and administrative settlements with a large population of ethnic people, prominent ethnic culture characteristics and production and living facilities, among other traits.

The villages should reflect their inhabitants' ethnic customs through industrial structures, residential housing styles, village design and social traditions.

The villages are encouraged to preserve the culture and history of local ethnic groups, which embody Chinese civilization's diversity. They should also become a vital resource to accelerate the development of ethnic groups and areas.

Since 2016, Guizhou has named a total of 1,328 villages as ethnic minority-style villages and stockade villages.

According to experts, Guizhou's ethnic minority villages have peculiar features and represent Guizhou's ethnic culture, regional culture, mountains and rivers, folk culture and architectural culture.
