There are 49 ethnic Groups in Guiyang, with a population of 721,500, which makes up 16.03 percent of the city's total population. Eleven ethnic groups have lived in Guiyang since ancient times; they are Miao, Bouyei, Tujia, Yi, Dong, Gelao, Bai, Hui, Manchu, Zhuang, and Sui. The ethnic groups mainly inhabit 17 ethnic townships and 309 ethnic communities.
