Xiaolan Lake in Guiyang's Baiyun district beckons as urban summer escape

Tucked between deep mountain valleys in Dianshan village, Baiyun district, Guiyang, Xiaolan Lake has emerged as a go-to destination for city dwellers seeking a quick getaway. With its strikingly clear indigo-blue waters, vast stretches of virgin cedar forests, and a growing range of outdoor activities, the lake has become a hotspot for nature photography, camping, and summer retreats.

Just a one-hour drive from downtown Guiyang, the lake feels a world away. Dense forest cover forms a natural barrier, keeping average temperatures as low as 21 C in the shade and earning the area a reputation as a true urban oxygen bar.

Building on its rich natural assets, the Xiaolan Lake camping site has recently upgraded its offerings to create a more varied leisure experience. On the water, visitors can enjoy paddleboarding and casual fishing, soaking in the cool lake breeze. Among the trees, camping tents and standalone wooden viewing cabins cater to couples seeking privacy as well as families traveling with children.

Every weekend, crowds of city residents, photography enthusiasts, and families make their way to the lake. Some take slow walks along the lakeside trail, breathing in the fresh scent of pine and grass. Others sit quietly on forest terraces with a cup of coffee, leaving the city's noise far behind. Many photographers time their visit to sunset, waiting for that perfect moment when the lake surface shimmers gold.

The Xiaolan Lake culture and tourism project is a vivid example of Baiyun district's efforts to revitalize its rural ecological resources and promote integrated cultural and tourism development.

Taking advantage of the beautiful mountains and waters of Dianshan village, local authorities have been improving parking facilities, trails, and rest areas while exploring the tourism potential of natural scenery, outdoor recreation, and rural camping. The project enriches Guiyang's summer tourism offerings, creates a model for suburban micro-vacations, and provides residents with a cool, nature-filled retreat right at their doorstep.
