Online travel portal Tongcheng Travel released its 2026 Summer Heat-Escape Travel Trends Report on July 17, highlighting Guizhou's superior plateau climate, karst landscapes, and rich ethnic culture. Guiyang ranked first among long-distance summer heat-escape destinations, while Liupanshui placed fourth on the same list, cementing Guizhou's status as a core destination for long-distance summer travel nationwide.

Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, Northeast China, and Inner Mongolia autonomous region remain China's three traditional summer retreat hotspots. Guiyang stands out with the karst scenery of central Guizhou, diverse ethnic cuisine, and summer resort options that support both short-term sightseeing and long-term wellness stays. Liupanshui, on the other hand, capitalizes on its reputation as "China's Cool Capital", focusing on residential wellness vacations.
With two cities from the same province making it into the national top 10 for long-distance summer travel, Guizhou forms a dual-core pattern of "cool cities wreathed in mountains and waters", offering distinctly differentiated summer experiences.
Across Guizhou, activities such as karst landscape hiking, immersive Miao village experiences, and slow-paced forest wellness tours appeal to travelers of all ages. The report also notes that nearly 60 percent of wellness and residential travel products at traditional summer destinations nationwide cater to the 60- to 75-year-old silver-haired demographic. Guizhou's mild and refreshing plateau climate has made it particularly popular among middle-aged and senior travelers seeking extended stays.
This year, inbound summer travel has emerged as a new growth driver. As a well-known summer destination in Southwest China, Guiyang has seen a corresponding rise in international passenger traffic, with more overseas visitors traveling specifically to experience its cool landscapes and unique blend of natural beauty and ethnic culture.
