On Oct 31, during a wetland bird diversity monitoring activity at Guiyang Ahahu National Wetland Park, a rare osprey – a nationally protected, second-class species –was observed for the first time. This discovery raises the total number of nationally protected bird species recorded in the park to 40.
The osprey, commonly known as the fish hawk, is the only medium-sized raptor species in its genus and family. It measures 51–64 centimeters in length, with a white head and underparts, prominent black eye stripes, and wings that form a distinctive "M" shape during flight. Primarily feeding on fish, the osprey is a migratory species in Guizhou and mainly inhabits aquatic areas.
In recent years, the park has advanced biodiversity conservation efforts through measures including wetland protection and restoration, resource monitoring, and habitat quality improvement.
Moving forward, the park will continue to strengthen monitoring and protection efforts for rare birds such as the osprey, making Guizhou's mountains and waters an ideal habitat for more wildlife to thrive and reproduce.
