Nanming district in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, has stepped up urban renewal, cultural preservation, and public service improvements over the past five years, as it seeks to enhance residents' quality of life while strengthening its appeal as a tourism and consumption destination.
The district received 132 million tourist visits during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), generating 216.09 billion yuan ($32.4 billion) in tourism revenue.
In 2025, Nanming recorded 9.54 million overnight domestic and international tourist visits, while overnight inbound tourist arrivals reached 121,800 — both ranking first in Guiyang.
New consumer destinations have helped drive the growth. For example, Qingyun Road Pedestrian Street has been transformed into a mixed-use destination combining local food, cultural experiences, and nightlife. Its Qingyun Market now hosts 325 businesses, bringing traditional Guiyang cuisine together with craft beer, coffee, and other contemporary offerings.
The district has also upgraded urban infrastructure and residential communities. Over the past five years, it renovated 1,127.6 kilometers of underground pipelines, improved 250 back streets and alleys, and added 19,000 public parking spaces. Renovation projects covered 2.31 million square meters of shantytowns and urban villages and 4.6 million sq m of older residential communities.
Cultural heritage has been integrated into the renewal process. In April 2026, a 400-meter section of the Guancheng River in Nanming was reopened after being uncovered, restoring a stretch of the historic waterway and creating a riverside cultural route featuring bridges and displays of local history.
Public services have expanded alongside urban improvements. Over the past five years, the district created 193,400 urban jobs. Since 2022, it has built or expanded 32 primary and secondary schools and kindergartens, adding more than 20,000 places for students. Public school enrollment among children of migrant workers has reached 100 percent.
Healthcare and elderly care services have also improved, including the opening of the Guizhou Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine and the expansion of community-based elderly care facilities.
