As a demonstration site for the utilization of vacant houses in rural areas, Shanshu village in Zhanjie town, Qingzhen city, Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, received 21,000 tourists during the May Day holiday this year.
All guest rooms at its rural homestays have been booked until August.
Located along the Red Maple Lake, a State-level scenic spot, the village occupies an area of 10 square kilometers and has 13 villager groups. The village turned its vacant houses into 20 rural homestays with 142 guest rooms. This cost a total of 29.75 million yuan ($4.14 million) and employed 91 locals.
The village in recent years has been integrating local culture with barbecues and camping activities. The price of guest rooms at its high-end rural homestays ranges from 800 yuan to nearly 4,000 yuan per night.
