In the campaign to improve rural living conditions, the county-level city of Qingzhen in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, has adhered to a problem-oriented principle and has taken gradual steps to tackle living condition problems in the rural area that concern people most, such as waste processing, polluted water management, toilet renovation, green space, and road hardening.
Qingzhen was praised at the beginning of the year by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs as an advanced county in the national sanitary campaign.
Qingzhen's efforts can be seen in Xiaogou village, which has launched a toilet transformation campaign. A demonstration toilet was established to help villagers renovate their own toilets. The government also offered technical instructions on construction standards and facilities of toilets to villagers. By the end of June, more than 95 percent of villagers had access to clean and spacious toilets.
Another example is Yongle village, which since 2019 has invested over 10 million yuan ($ 1.5 million) in the reconstruction of houses and yards in the village. The renewed village is a hot tourism destination and there are now 10 homestays and agritainment venues operated by villagers.
