In Haoguan village, located in Zhuchang town of Guiyang's Guanshanhu district, the cole flowers are in full bloom. This 200-mu (13.33-hectare) golden sea of flowers, set against pink-walled farmhouses and green mountains, forms a beautiful pastoral scene.
As the flower-viewing season unfolds, the daily routine of Wang Zhenyou, a resident of Haoguan village, has become increasingly hectic. Wang's snack shop, located on the edge of a cole flower field, is filled with the aroma of fried potatoes and stir-fried rice throughout the flower-viewing season.
"For several years now, the village has extensively planted cole flowers, attracting an increasing number of tourists and boosting business for the snack shop," Wang said.
He added that during the cole flower blooming period this year, the shop's income reached nearly 10,000 yuan ($1,389.03), several times higher than the same period last year.
The blooming period of cole flowers is not lengthy, roughly around 10 days, which means that the snack shop is only seasonal work. Wang and his wife primarily rely on agricultural income and odd jobs for their livelihood. They consider the income from the snack shop as an added bonus.
Wang Xianzong, deputy director of the Haoguan village committee, mentioned that this year, the cole flowers in village are growing well, and the flowering period will continue until the end of March. After these flowers mature, they are processed into rapeseed oil and then sold, providing additional income for the farmers.
To help more farmers increase their income, Haoguan village is implementing a crop rotation system for cole flowers and rice in order to achieve the goal of "spring cole flower viewings and autumn rice harvests." This initiative aims to create new agricultural tourism integration formats, further promoting rural vitalization.
