Xifeng county in Southwest China's Guizhou province has transformed its broiler chicken industry from scattered backyard farming into a complete industrial chain covering breeding, feed production, farming, processing, and sales over the past 18 years.
In 2025, the county's annual broiler output reached 15 million chickens, generating more than 700 million yuan ($103.22 million) in output and involving over 500 farming households.
Early in the morning in Luyiya village, Jiuzhuang town, Xifeng, farmer Yang Hao checks a smart farming platform on his phone, where real-time data such as temperature, humidity, and ammonia levels inside the chicken houses are displayed. In the automated facility, more than 100,000 yellow-feathered chickens feed comfortably in a constant-temperature environment.
Before 2008, Xifeng's poultry industry was dominated by small-scale household farming with unstable sales channels. The county later introduced leading agricultural enterprises and adopted a standardized model covering chicken house construction, chick supply, feed distribution, epidemic prevention, technical guidance, and guaranteed purchasing. Farmers are responsible for daily management, while companies ensure stable market access.

"In the past, we only raised a few chickens to earn extra money for daily necessities. Now, with sales contracts signed in advance and large-scale farming possible, the income is more stable than migrant work," said Xu Jiacai, a farmer from Jiuzhuang town. "Raising chickens helped me shake off poverty and even buy a car."
Xifeng has now established a broiler chicken industrial park equipped with feed mills, slaughtering and processing plants, and trading centers. The county has also expanded into related industries such as spicy chicken products and organic fertilizer production, forming an integrated chain spanning farming, processing, sales, and recycling. The industry has created jobs for more than 2,000 people, with participating households increasing their annual income by over 50,000 yuan on average.
