In 2023, Xifeng county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, made significant strides in its battle against pollution.
The county successfully met the water quality standards for 14 surface water assessment sections and 12 urban and rural centralized drinking water sources, while also attaining an excellent rating of 96.2 percent in environmental air quality.
Efforts were stepped up through enhanced inspections and management of gas stations and key catering enterprises to ensure the proper functioning of oil recovery and fume purification systems.
Emphasis was placed on controlling construction site activities, industrial emissions, and oil and gas pollution prevention facilities to effectively mitigate potential pollution risks.
Continued emphasis was placed on water environment improvement, with increased patrols and guidance to ensure the normal operation of nine county and township sewage treatment plants.
In addition, the county made significant progress in the disposal and utilization of industrial solid waste, notably through initiatives like the comprehensive utilization of phosphogypsum, resulting in the handling of 268.92 million metric tons of general industrial solid waste in 2023, with a comprehensive utilization rate of 94.12 percent.
Meanwhile, building on the vision of a zero-waste city, efforts were sustained in the standardized storage and harmless disposal of hazardous waste, resulting in the proper handling of 445.98 tons of various hazardous wastes throughout the year, including 200.54 tons of medical waste.
