People can reach Dahong village in Shidong town after a 50-minute drive from downtown Xifeng, county in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province. The village is now surrounded by mountains and mist, and the white walls and grey-green roofs of houses are now arranged in a staggered manner.
As a demonstration village for rural revitalization and a home for ethnic groups, Dahong village has undergone a series of reforms mainly in terms of housing aesthetics, water pollution, waste, bathrooms, and the elimination of vulgar habits.
According to Wang Shixiu, a villager interviewed, it is more convenient now to use the improved toilet, which has been equipped with bathing facilities. In addition, the sewage that has been deposited, fermented, and filtered can be used as natural fertilizer for vegetation in gardens.
There are a total of 188 households in the village that have had their bathrooms renovated, and in 2022, an additional 48 households will have their bathrooms renovated.
Daily waste is currently sorted by households, collected by villages, transferred by towns, and processed in Xifeng county. Dahong village also promotes several waste reduction measures, such as feeding organic waste to poultry and livestock, spraying coal ash on soil, and chartering recyclable waste for money or useful items.
