The 2024 wax dyeing technique training course opened in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, on July 8. The course is the first this year to be hosted by the Lanhua Xushi Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop.
The course will allow participants to contribute to the protection of intangible cultural heritage in Guiyang and help expand the market for cultural and creative products with the skills they learn.
The course has attracted many rural artisans, traditional craftsmen from various industries, and students from the cognitive science and technology major at Guizhou Minzu University.
The College of Culture and Cognitive Science at Guizhou Minzu University was established by Tsinghua University's cognitive science team and is the first in the country to combine ethnic culture with cognitive science as well as the first to name the college after cognitive science.
The curriculum of the college follows the cognitive science standards of top universities in the United States, integrating traditional interdisciplinary approaches and cross-disciplinary thinking. The aim is for students to enhance their deep interdisciplinary thinking.
After the opening ceremony, Long Youming, director of the Guizhou Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, delivered a lecture on the development of intangible cultural heritage, presenting a series of vivid and thorough case studies.
Over the following days, participants will attend classes on the history and development of wax dyeing techniques, engage in practical sessions on Miao wax dyeing skills, and watch documentaries related to anthropology and natural conservation.
