The Dongfang Xiangyun big data flood forecasting system, independently developed by Guizhou East Century Technology Co (East Century), has gained a strategic advantage in flood control and disaster prevention.
East Century is based in the Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone (Guiyang HIDZ) in the city of Guiyang.
"The company attaches great importance to increasing the quality of its technology because the faster and more accurate the forecast, the greater the reduction in damage caused by flood disasters," said Li Sheng, chairman and general manager of East Century.
With a remarkable speed of just 2 minutes and 20 seconds, the system can calculate a 72-hour flood warning forecast for 520,000 small and medium-sized rivers nationwide, making it the fastest flood forecasting system in the world.
It has successfully issued flood warning messages 28,000 times in Guizhou province, defending them against 13 heavy rainfall and flood events.
It also provides flood control and disaster prevention forecasting services for 57,000 reservoirs and hydropower stations across the country.
Since its establishment, the company has obtained 28 patents, 32 software copyrights, and 12 qualification licenses.
