Lyuzhi River Bridge, the first single-tower and single-span steel box girder suspension bridge in the history of highway construction, was recently granted the 2023 FIDIC Global Infrastructure Award of Merit.
The award was announced at the 2023 Global Infrastructure Conference in Singapore on Sept 12.
This bridge design has set three world records as a single-pylon suspension bridge with a maximum span of 780 meters, a maximum inclination angle of 54 degrees for tunnel anchors, and a maximum height of 320 meters for stiffening beam hoisting.
The bridge lies on the Yuxi-Chuxiong Highway in Southwest China's Yunnan province.
Its construction saw several innovative technologies introduced, showcasing the unique engineering intelligence of the builders. It broke through the restricted engineering zone of building bridges on high cliffs in an ecologically friendly manner, protecting the natural landform and wildlife resources of the Lyuzhi River Gorge, and achieving the harmonious unity of people, bridges and the natural environment.

Since the bridge was completed, transportation in remote areas has been greatly improved and the economy in local ethnic minority areas has further developed. The bridge has now become a new local landmark.
It was designed by Guizhou Transportation Planning Survey and Design Academe Co, a resident enterprise in the Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone (Guiyang HIDZ) in the city of Guiyang in Guizhou province.
It is a leading enterprise in the survey and design of highways in Guizhou and once won the "Gustav Lindsall" award, known as the Nobel Prize of the bridge industry.
