Guiyang manufacturers of proprietary Chinese medicines account for 75 percent of all pharmaceutical enterprises in the nation and 87 percent of the sector's total output value.
Guiyang has established a pharmaceutical industry structure centered on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) products, with coordinated development in biopharmaceuticals, chemical drugs, medical devices and packaging materials, according to the Guizhou province's TCM work conference held in February.
To promote the standardized cultivation of Chinese medicinal herbs, Guiyang has built 15 customized medicinal herb plantations and supported five enterprises in obtaining qualifications for fresh-processing of medicinal materials. These efforts have integrated cultivation and processing, helping improve the quality of raw medicinal ingredients.
Guiyang is home to 64 pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises above the designated size, with several generating annual output values exceeding 1 billion yuan ($147.72 million). Ten companies have also been included in the provincial reserve pool of key pharmaceutical enterprises.
The city has continued to support pharmaceutical companies in improving efficiency and upgrading production lines through intelligent manufacturing. In 2025, Guiyang assisted 14 enterprises in securing a total of 10.18 million yuan in special development funds from the Guizhou Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, accelerating industrial transformation and upgrading.
Moving forward, Guiyang will focus on developing the health and pharmaceutical industries in Wudang district and Xifeng county while improving supporting infrastructure in industrial parks.
In Wudang, a 5-billion-yuan western medical industry park invested by Sinopharm is under construction and has already attracted more than 20 enterprises. In Xifeng, a chemical active pharmaceutical ingredient industrial park with an investment of 1.95 billion yuan has introduced six enterprises.
