The agricultural and rural bureau of Wudang district in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently reported that the district has exceeded this year's grain planting target set by the city.
So far, the district has planted 46,100 mu (3073.33 hectares) of corn, 26,039 mu of rice, and 15,328 mu of soybeans.
This year, Wudang has planted 14,200 mu of summer grain, an increase of 10.2 percent compared to last year, with a total yield of 3,420 metric tons.
Its cole-planting area has reached 17,700 mu, with a total yield of 1,846.1 tons, an increase of 11.4 tons compared to last year.
In order to ensure food security, Wudang issued annual grain and oil production tasks to each township and town according to the "2023 Work Plan for Grain Production in Wudang district," and leaders at all levels are responsible for achieving the annual grain production target.
Efforts have also been made to promote the construction of 5,000 mu of high-standard farmland, clean and maintain 316 water pumps, purchase 20,000 yuan ($2,788) worth of water pipes, and repair 10 kilometers of ditches and channels, which has greatly enhanced the disaster resilience of farmland.
The district has also utilized technology to increase grain and oil production capacity, including providing aphid control medication, assigning 66 agricultural technicians to provide technical support for grain and oil production in each village, distributing over 8,500 copies of technical materials, and issuing subsidies for the purchase of agricultural machinery and equipment.
Next, Wudang will work to improve water conservation facilities, cultivate family farms and large-scale plantations, continue to strengthen field management, and carry out work such as disease and pest control as well as field water and fertilizer management, guaranteeing annual grain production and the stable supply of important agricultural products.
