Wudang district, in the northeast of Guiyang, is one of the city's new urban areas. Covering 686 square kilometers, the district administers five townships, three towns, two sub-district offices, 74 village committees, and 18 neighborhood committees.
By the end of 2009, the district had a population of 297,000, with 33 nationalities including Han, and ethnic minorities such as the Buyi and the Miao. The population of ethnic minorities was 53,400, accounting for 18 percent of the total population.
The district has a convenient expressway network connecting to cities inside and outside Guizhou province. Its Xintian area is eight km from Longdongbao International Airport and 10 km from Guiyang Railway Station.
With an average elevation of 1,242 meters, Wudang district has a humid subtropical monsoon climate and its annual average temperature is 14.6 C. There is no severe cold in winter and no severe heat in summer. The district is surrounded by mountains and streams, with a forest coverage rate of 48.92 percent. Wudang district is a hot spring site known for its rich geothermal resources.
Wudang district's economy has grown in recent years.
In 2019, fixed asset investment in Wudang district increased by 0.9 percent year-on-year and the added value of companies above a designated size – posting annual revenue of 20 million yuan ($2.82 million) or more — in the district increased by 1.5 percent year-on-year.
From January to December, the total retail sales of consumer goods there totaled 3.11 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.7 percent and 0.5 percentage points higher than Guiyang city's average.
Meanwhile, the capital in place for newly introduced industrial projects totaled 9.283 billion yuan, officials said.
