Peng Jianchao, director of the Party Working Committee of the Guiyang Free Trade Zone (FTZ) - in Southwest China's Guizhou province - visited Tuxiang village in Guiyang city on March 27, to inspect progress in its moves to alleviate poverty, Guiyang FTZ officials said.
Officials said one example of starting up businesses to lift locals out of poverty was a pepper seedling nursery base in the village, which covers an area of more than 20 mu (1.33 hectares). It can provide pepper seedlings for 150 mu of land, which is expected to be transplanted in late April.
Peng listened to the reports given by the village committee on this year's pepper planting plan, technical training, marketing and how the business would help poverty-stricken households.
She indicated that it was necessary to implement industrial assistance policies and identify market trends to ensure that absolute poverty can be eliminated through industrial development in 2020.
Cadres of the Tuxiang village committee said that they would focus on the seedling cultivation, transplanting and management of the pepper industry to ensure steady output, guiding villagers to emerge from destitution and become better off.
