Yunyan district in Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has installed elevators for old residential communities to help improve people's living conditions.

Since the installation of the elevators, residents have praised the district government for the convenience the elevators bring, saying they have made their lives easier, especially for elderly people living on mid-to-high-level floors.

Prior to the installation work, older buildings were designed only with staircases that posed hindrances to many residents.

It was reported that in January 2020 that Block 42 of the Qingfengyuan Residential Area in the Yanwu sub-district community in the district was the first to install elevators. Subsequently, 30 households of elderly residents no longer had to climb the stairs as they had been accustomed to doing for nearly four decades.

As the first complex in the city's old residential area to install elevators, it has allowed the 30 households living there to bid farewell to almost four decades of having to walk up and down various flights of stairs every day.

"I never thought I could live in a building with an elevator at my age. The government truly cares about us elderly citizens and has effectively solved the major problem of dealing with all those stairs," said She Guixiang, a resident of Block 42 in Qingfengyuan who is in his 90s.

In December 2020, the Tianhuayuan residential community in the district became the first old residential area in the province to have all 12 units installed with elevators.

Till now, 71 elevators have been installed by Yunyan district in 27 old residential areas, with 62 fully completed.
