Since 2016, Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has invested a whopping 1.67 billion yuan ($239.57 million) to assist 10 counties to eradicate poverty. The city has also taken full advantage of technology, its markets and human talent to get the job done.
At Guiyang's Agricultural Products Logistics Park, Dili Agricultural Products Logistics Park, 154 fresh supermarkets and 80 large-scale chain supermarkets, special areas have been set up to sell agricultural products produced in poverty-stricken counties.
Every year, Guiyang's schools, government departments and companies purchase 1.05 million metric tons of vegetables, 200,000 tons of fruit, 900,000 pigs and 40,000 tons of aquatic products to help the impoverished areas.
Over the past four years, Guiyang has purchased a total of 4.76 million tons of agricultural and sideline products produced in Guizhou, worth a total of 49.57 billion yuan.
Guiyang has implemented 376 poverty alleviation projects across the 10 counties, and Guiyang Agricultural Investment Development Co has established agricultural production areas totaling 500,000 mu (33,333.33 hectares).
Poverty alleviation projects helped 35 villages generate a total income of 5.4 million yuan in 2019, according to statistics, and helped 1,903 people from 633 low-income families to shake off poverty.
In addition, Guiyang provided 562,100 jobs for people living within the 10 poverty-stricken counties, helped over 400,000 students stay in school and supported the development of 31 hospitals.
