Guizhou province in Southwest China imported plant seedlings for the first time, with the first batch of 11,000 vegetable seeds in six varieties delivered to the purchaser after completing quarantine inspection at Guiyang airport in Guiyang, the provincial capital, on March 19, local media reported.
The seeds were introduced by Guizhou Modern Seed Industry Group, the only enterprise in the province with import and export qualifications for seeds and seedlings. The State-owned enterprise has built a modern seedling system with an annual seedling production capacity of 460 million plants.
According to a manager of Guizhou Modern Seed Industry Group, the company purchased new high-quality varieties such as tomatoes, chilies, and bitter gourds from the Thai seed enterprise East-West Seed.
The seeds will be tested and planted with other varieties and select superior varieties with strong disease resistance, excellent quality, and high yield will be promoted and planted in high-altitude areas throughout the country.
Currently, the seeds are temporarily stored in the designated supervision warehouse of the airport customs. After completing customs clearance procedures, they will be isolated and planted at the Guiyang seed breeding center in Nanjiang township of Kaiyang county.
Officials from the Guiyang bureau of commerce said that the bureau will further improve the functions of the airport, allowing more Guizhou enterprises to directly introduce excellent plant seedlings from abroad in order to help them reduce operating costs.
