Commerce and trade in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently further recovered, according to local officials.
The Guiyang municipal bureau of commerce released figures on May 6, which showed that the sales of local major retail enterprises hit 153.23 million yuan ($21.56 million) during the May Day holiday on May 1-5, up 31.7 percent year on year.
Major catering companies during the same period achieved a turnover of 3.4 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 15.9 percent.
The bureau officially launched a 100-day promotion for the trade and retail industry on April 28, the largest ever and the longest promotion in Guiyang, to stimulate local consumer purchasing during the holiday.
During the May Day holiday, many stores in major department stores in the city focused on livestreaming promotions performed by online celebrities, smart business district developments and online entertainment – encouraging public consumption.
Local officials said the increase in the numbers of shoppers and the recovery in spending reflected the effective control of the novel coronavirus epidemic and the effectiveness of the 100-day shopping promotion.
They said businesses and merchants took the May Day holiday as an opportunity to roll out discounts and other deals to promote the consumer spending recovery, which in turn provided a strong boost to the city's economic recovery, according to the Guiyang municipal bureau of commerce.
Officials said the 100-day promotion will continue until the end of July. More than 100 promotional activities in cooperation with local business districts, retail and catering companies will take place during the period.
