Since the Huaxi Reservoir completed its drinking water source protection zoning in 2005, Huaxi district in Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has organized comprehensive management of the Huaxi River section of the Nanming River and has achieved significant results.
The Huaxi drinking water protection area includes the Huaxi Water Plant and the Zhongcao Water Plant, with a total area of 10.9 square kilometers.
It provides drinking water for 120,000 people within Huaxi district and 420,000 people in other areas.
In response to the low domestic sewage treatment rate of village farmers in the section of the Nanming River in Huaxi district, the district has built multiple sewage collection systems and constructed wetlands and biological beds to treat waste.
Huaxi district has invested 10 million yuan ($1.45 million) to promote the critical national water and soil conservation projects in the small watershed of Huaxi Reservoir, with a treatment area of more than 20 sq km.
A large number of sewage pumping stations, inspection wells, garbage collection bins and pedestrian walkways have been built.
The district also began the construction of sewage treatment plants and water recycling stations, striving to achieve a sewage treatment rate of more than 85 percent in villages and towns, and a sewage treatment rate of more than 95 percent in urban areas.
