Villager plants chives to help poverty alleviation

Updated: 2020-03-12

Chen Wenlin, a villager in Maling village, Huaxi district in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province -- has long relied on traditional planting and odd jobs to take care of his family.

But then he came up with an idea. In recent years, the Maling village Party committee and government has pushed forward adjustments to structure of the local agricultural industry in order to help poverty alleviation.

Chen began to think about how to increase his income to become better off and after many attempts, he opted to grow chives.

Last year, he planted more 0.33 hectares of chives, earning more than 30,000 yuan ($4,317.48) and  his family's annual per capita income increased by 7,500 yuan.

After settling on his course of action, Chen began to expand his operation and planted more than 1.3 hectares of chives by the end of 2019.

In addition to leading his family in the planting, he also employed other poverty-stricken villagers.

After expanding the scale of cultivation, he found selling about 100,000 kilograms of chives to be a challenge.

The village learned about Chen Wenlin's sales difficulties and actively sought help from Huaxi district business investment promotion bureau. With the strong support of the bureau, chives grown by Chen were sent to fresh food supermarkets for sale.

"I want to thank the village and the bureau for their help. I hope more supermarkets and wholesalers can contact me, so we can deliver door to door," Chen added.
