The capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, Guiyang, has launched 4,000 5G base stations as of July 22, becoming the first city to fulfill the province's 90-day 5G construction goal, according to statistics from the Guiyang municipal bureau of big data development and management.

It was reported on May 8 that Guizhou had issued a work plan to accelerate its 5G development. According to the plan, a total of 10,000 5G base stations would be built throughout the province by the end of July to advance basic network upgrades, information consumption and the digital economy.

The city has attached great importance to the construction of communication infrastructure – including 5G and the internet of things – along major streets and in business areas. It has launched full 5G network coverage in several districts, including Nanming, Yunyan and Guanshanhu.

As one of the first 5G pilot cities in China, Guiyang has fully committed to the development of 5G networks. The city has accelerated the construction of 5G infrastructure through fund acquisition and preferential policies, among other measures.

According to local officials, the Guiyang Municipal Bureau of Big Data Development and Management helped 116 5G base stations solve difficulties in site selection through the positive participation of China's three major telecom operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.

The city has joined hands with Guian New Area to strengthen the overall planning of 5G construction and development in terms of network creation, industrial agglomeration, fusion application, technological innovation and security systems.

Officials said Guiyang plans to utilize 5G technology in the digital city, industrial internet and smart tourism sectors. The metropolis will also build a demonstration zone for 5G innovation and application.
