Level of harmless treatment of rural domestic waste improved by 2025

Six national ministries, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, recently issued a notice stating that by 2025, the level of harmless treatment of rural household waste needs to be significantly improved, and villages need to implement household waste classification and source reduction.

The six ministries emphasized that the county, city, district, banner should be used as a unit to scientifically and reasonably determine the construction model of a rural domestic waste collection, transportation and disposal system based on factors such as the distribution of towns and villages, government financial resources, population size, traffic conditions, and transportation distances.

The notice proposed that in the eastern regions, central and western cities and suburban areas which meet certain conditions, the rural household garbage should implement a harmless garbage treatment mechanism, and a long-term management and protection mechanism should be fully established. In remote and economically underdeveloped areas, the level of waste management also needs to be improved.

All regions should make full use of the vast space for recycling and natural utilization in rural areas, and do a good job in the source classification and resource utilization of rural domestic waste.

To this end, pilot projects should be carried out in places with a better economic foundation and a high degree of acceptance by the masses, and villages in the construction areas of "no-waste cities" should take the lead in realizing garbage classification and source reduction.
