Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – announced that 500 alleys will be renovated this year to improve quality of life for residents.
In 2020 and 2021, Guiyang renovated 610 alleys, benefiting more than 1 million people in the area. This year's renovations will seek to solve issues related to poor drainage, lack of street lights and public toilets, insecure manhole covers, and redundant pipelines.
Colleges and professionals will be invited to formulate renovation plans, while 45,000 questionnaires will be distributed to solicit opinions and suggestions from the masses.
Three volunteer supervisors and one safety officer will be employed for each reconstructed street to oversee design, construction, safety, and management.
In addition, Guiyang will select 150 of the 500 alleys to be built into boutique cultural streets. The construction will focus on the history and stories of the streets, and emphasize the local culture.
