The municipal government of Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – has included the improvement of city laneways as one of its 10 welfare items to be met in a civic improvement program, under which it will renovate its 360, 450, and 296 laneways during 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively.

The 360 laneways for 2021 involve 12 districts, cities, counties, and development zones. They currently involve more than 1 million square meters of roads and building facades along laneways to be improved, within more than 100,000 meters of drainpipes, benefiting about 1 million residents.

In addition to the roads and building facades, the government has also introduced requirements in 14 areas – including in municipal facilities, advertisements, green spaces, overhead pipelines, cleaning services and illegal buildings.

Authorities have also invited the public to get engaged in the planning of the laneways, by visiting over 5,000 households along the pathways, to learn about their needs involved in the renovation work.

It's been reported that social capital was also enlisted to participate in the work. Advertisement spaces, parking spaces and stalls were established along the laneways.
