In order to make more public space available to residents and improve people's living conditions, the municipal government in Guiyang has demolished a number of unauthorized buildings covering a total area of 70,000 square meters.

Baihua Yard in Wudang district was built during the 1990s when people used coal sheds to store coal for heating and cooking. Over the years, the sheds in the yard have been abandoned, with the empty buildings taking up a large area of public space.

"These coal sheds had a negative impact on the environment, and had impinged on residents' legal interests," said Deng Cheng, a resident in the yard.

Government officials recently look the decision to demolish the sheds, allowing the restoration of the original green space. A number of park lots were also added.

Nanming district made a similar effort and has restored nearly 1000 sq m of public space. Following discussions, the cleared area has been transformed into outdoor lounges, a small fire station, and green space. As a result, roads that were once cluttered are now easier to walk down, thanks to the additional space created.
