The first phase of the old community renovation work has begun in Xichukou area, Yunyan district, Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, following a launch ceremony held on May 15.

Officials from the Guiyang bureau of housing and urban-rural development addressed the event.

The project is designed to renew the old communities of Yunyan. Infrastructure including buildings, roads, pipe networks, safety and fire prevention facilities, and other supporting equipment will be renewed during the work, in order to improve citizens' living conditions.

The renovation work is being funded with an investment of 238 million yuan ($35.7 million), including several sections in Yan'an West Road and Touqiao Road, and the total construction area will be 198,200 square meters.

The bureau urged the Yunyan government to play a guiding role in the renovation work, engaging with enterprises as well as residents from old communities and shanty towns.

The first phase, benefiting 4,061 households, is scheduled to be completed in October 2022.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), Yunyan had already renovated 33,400 households in shanty towns and 275 old communities in total, benefiting 130,000 residents.
