Construction on the Guiyang Pumped Storage Power Station began on Oct 18 in Xiuwen county, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province.
It is the first pumped storage power station project in the province to be approved and launched.
The power station has a total installed capacity of 1,500 megawatts and received a total of 9.25 billion yuan ($1.26 billion) in investment. The first unit of the station is expected to start generating electricity in 2028 and be completed and fully operational by 2029.
Once completed, the power station will supply 1.78 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, increase the absorption of wind and solar energy by 3.66 billion kWh and reduce the use of standard coal by 1.08 million metric tons each year.
The power station will also undertake tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase adjustment, and standby during accidents in the power grid, further ensuring the safe and stable operation of Guizhou's power grid.
