Kaiyang holds over 80% of China's high-quality phosphate reserves

Updated: 2025-12-12

Kaiyang county, relying on its abundant high-quality phosphate resources, has identified three main areas of focus in its industrial development – basic phosphorus chemicals, fine phosphorus-fluorine chemicals, and new energy battery materials.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), a number of enterprises settled in Kaiyang. In 2024, Kaiyang's total industrial output value above the designated size reached 29.81 billion yuan ($4.23 billion), with an industrial added value of 10.30 billion yuan and industrial tax revenue of 2.40 billion yuan.

Kaiyang's basic phosphorus chemical production capacity continues to expand. Its proven phosphate resource reserves stand at 1.90 billion metric tons. Its reserves of high-quality, rich ore with a grade above 32 percent account for more than 80 percent of the national total. Its annual production capacity of phosphate rock has reached 11 million tons. It has also achieved an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons of yellow phosphorus, 1.54 million tons of phosphoric acid, and 40,000 tons of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

Kaiyang's fine phosphorus-fluorine chemical industry is being optimized. Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group has applied wet-process purified phosphoric acid in a tiered approach, transitioning from fertilizer-grade to industrial-grade, electronic-grade, and food-grade products. The comprehensive utilization of yellow phosphorus tail gas has transformed it into a raw material for products.

Kaiyang's new energy battery materials industry is growing rapidly. The county has attracted a number of new energy battery material production enterprises, reaching an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons of lithium iron phosphate.
