In 2023, Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, continued to lead as Guiyang's industrial "dark horse", especially in the new energy sector, transforming itself from the phosphorus capital into the energy storage capital.
Known as the "Green Phosphorus Capital of China", Kaiyang is one of the country's three major phosphorus mining regions. Historically, the county's phosphorus chemical industry thrived, but recently, it has faced challenges such as low added value and high energy consumption associated with traditional products like yellow phosphorus and fertilizers, underscoring the urgency of transformation.
With the rapid rise of the new energy industry in China, resource-rich Kaiyang has found new opportunities to develop the new energy battery material industry chain and has achieved remarkable achievements.
Compared to 2021, the industrial output value of enterprises above the designated size in Kaiyang's industrial park increased from 9.8 billion yuan ($1.34 billion) to 26.6 billion yuan, accounting for 96 percent of the county's total. The value added by enterprises above the designated size grew from 3.85 billion yuan to 8.42 billion yuan, with an average annual growth rate of 48 percent.
In March 2023, Anda Technology went public on the Beijing Stock Exchange, becoming Kaiyang's first listed company. In September, construction started in Kaiyang on Guizhou's first potassium hydroxide production line. In December, Guizhou's largest centralized energy storage power station was connected to the grid in Kaiyang.
