Standards for selenium-enriched lozenges produced in Kaiyang county in Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province will officially take effect on Dec 30.

The standards were passed by Guizhou Provincial Standardization Institute at a meeting held on Dec 9.

At the meeting, the institute introduced the draft version, process and principles of the proposed standards.

The judging panel, made up of experts in the field, discussed and gave opinions on the standards in terms of their definition, scope, testing requirements, and other parameters.

The attendees agreed to pass the standards and determined the effective time of the standards.

It is expected that the establishment of the standards will further standardize the production of selenium-enriched lozenges in Kaiyang, improve product quality, and promote the rapid and healthy development of the related intensive processing industry.

Around 99.91 percent of the soil in Kaiyang county is rich in selenium, and the selenium content of animals and plants is between 0.05 and 0.28 mg/kg, which meets the United Nations Health Organization's selenium content standard for health foods.

The selenium-rich rice, oil and tea produced in the county have been designed as "China Organic Food".
