Kaiyang county has proven phosphate ore reserves of 1.9 billion metric tons and prospective reserves of 3.1 billion tons. Among them, rich ore reserves with P_2O5 content higher than 32 percent account for more than 80 percent of the country's reserves. It is a well-known phosphate mine production area and is known as "China Green Phosphorus City". 

The county is also rich in mineral resources such as coal, bauxite and silica.

Kaiyang county has been rated as the country's first Cyclic Economy Phosphorus Coal Chemical Eco-industry Demonstration County and Four-Star National New Industrialization Demonstration Base.

In addition, 99.91 percent of the soil in Kaiyang county is rich in selenium, and the selenium content of animals and plants is between 0.05 and 0.28 mg/kg, which meets the United Nations Health Organization's selenium content standard for health food.

The selenium-rich rice, oil and tea produced in the county has won the honorable title of China Organic Food.
