A unique celebration of the 57th World Earth Day unfolded in Guiyang on April 22, as Guizhou marked the occasion with two parallel exhibitions that connected science with cultural heritage.
Hosted by the Guizhou Department of Natural Resources, the event featured a rare insect exhibition alongside a showcase of traditional batik craftsmanship from Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture, offering visitors a vivid exploration of nature and tradition.
The insect exhibition presented nearly 1,000 rare specimens from around the world, creating a striking microcosm of biodiversity. From the iridescent blue morpho butterfly of South America to leaf-mimicking species, giant rhinoceros beetles and birdwing butterflies, the display highlighted the diversity, evolution and ecological importance of the insect kingdom.
The exhibition also emphasized their role as vital indicators of environmental health, drawing attention to the growing challenges posed by habitat loss, climate change and intensive agriculture.
Running alongside the science-focused exhibit, the batik showcase presented over 100 traditional and contemporary works from Qiandongnan. Visitors could observe the full process through the assorted tools, materials and finished textiles on display. The exhibition also highlighted master artisans and inheritors of this intangible cultural heritage, whose works reflect deep cultural symbolism rooted in respect for nature.
