A giant 800.15-megawatt photovoltaic (PV) plant in Qatar, constructed by POWERCHINA Guizhou Engineering Co – based in Guiyang, capital city of China's Southwest Guizhou province – was recently successfully connected to the grid in Qatar at full capacity.
That made it the first large-scale onshore PV plant project connected to the grid at full capacity in Qatar.
It's the third biggest single PV plant in the world to date and the largest PV plant project in the world using tracking systems and bifacial modules.

The plant is expected to provide Qatar with about 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity every year, meet the annual electricity consumption of about 300,000 households, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 900,000 metric tons per year.
During the construction stage, the project department at POWERCHINA Guizhou Engineering Co rose to the challenge and overcame the pressures of manpower shortages and hardship, and rising raw materials costs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite a harsh working environment that included frequent sandstorms and high temperatures of 50 degrees, the project department team advanced the project as planned.
"The project has attracted the attention of local and international media, with environmental impact factors the focus of everyone's attention," said Li Jun, deputy manager of the project.
A detailed plan was put together for the indigenous animals and plants – such as lizards, snakes and shrubs – and new homes were found for them, to minimize the impact on the local ecosystem and environment.

In addition, during construction, the project department followed eco-friendly principles, including recycling and doing a good job in garbage classification and treatment. This created an efficient use of energy on an environmentally friendly construction site, Li added.
In recent years, POWERCHINA Guizhou Engineering Co has actively responded to the Belt and Road Initiative, serving the energy and infrastructure construction programs of the countries involved in it.
Moreover, the company has built many large-scale green energy power stations around the world and has become a brand enterprise promoting POWERCHINA in the field of overseas renewable energy construction.
