Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently issued guidance to regulate foreign-language signs in public places, aiming to provide a convenient living environment for people from other countries.

To solve misspellings, mistranslations and awkward translations, Guiyang Foreign Affairs Office learned from the experience of other cities and provinces. The office also took references from relevant national standards and solicited opinions from over 40 companies in Guiyang before issuing the guidance.

In the future, Guiyang will publicize the national standards of foreign-language translation in public service areas and provide consultation and search services for the commissioning and usage of foreign-language signs.

The city will also encourage and reward citizens and volunteers for correcting errors on foreign-language signs.

Guiyang will also hire language experts to provide professional advice and establish a management mechanism to supervise the creation of foreign-language signs.
