Authorities in Palmerston North held a promotional education program on June 1 in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, as part of efforts to attract local students to study in the city in the North Island of New Zealand.
The 2019 Summer School Student Scholarship Conference was held not only to share education information, but also to facilitate on-site interviews between the students and their target universities and middle schools.
The program was organized by a visiting education delegation led by Tangi Utikere, deputy mayor of Palmerston North, Xander Burns, deputy consul general of New Zealand in Chengdu, and Ye Fangmin, senior education director of New Zealand Education International Promotion Bureau.
The New Zealand Education International Promotion Bureau staff member Wang Ye shared the overall information about Palmerston North city to the participating students and parents.
The event also facilitated interactions among the participants and the education organizations including Massey University, IPU New Zealand Tertiary Institute, St Peter's College, Awatapu College, Palmerston North Boys' High School, Palmerston North Girls' High School, and Freyberg High School.
The staff members shared the basic situation and characteristics of their organizations, the statistic of overseas student in New Zealand, and answered questions on overseas study policies.
The delegation conducted one-on-one interviews for Guiyang students interested in studying in New Zealand to inspire them to study in Palmerston North.
Pan Jingyue, a student from Guiyang International Bilingual Academy, won a scholarship of NZ$2,500 and would attend new summer courses in July this year.
Palmerston North, as the seventh-largest city in New Zealand, has an area of 395 square kilometers and a population of 86,300. It is one of the youngest New Zealand cities in the demographic term, and is known as the "City of Knowledge", "City of Students" and "City of Safety".
It is the city’s strong academic atmosphere, favorable climate, abundant pastoral life, beautiful natural scenery, multi-cultural activities and achievements in international trade that have attracted a large international population to visit and settle down in the city.
