Guiyang, Guian's NEV industry enters new era

An increasing number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) made in Guiyang, with nearly all parts produced locally, are being sent around the world, marking a major step forward for the industry in Guiyang and Guian New Area, located in Southwest China's Guizhou province.

Bourgeoning manufacturing enterprises continue to unleash the potential of the city, which is on its way to becoming home to 100-billion-yuan-level ($15.26 billion) NEV and related material industries.

China has made a global promise to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Against this backdrop, NEV manufacturing is gaining momentum. Guizhou's reserves in coal, manganese, and phosphorus rank fifth, first, and third in China, giving it a unique advantage in producing NEV power cells.

In addition to abundant natural resources, Guizhou is also redoubling efforts in innovation and policy incentives to address its industrial weak links, and a number of domestic NEV manufacturing powerhouses have established businesses there. For example, CATL's lithium power cell project has been established in Guian, and BYD has achieved the large-scale production of NEV batteries in the Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone.

The central government made it clear at the beginning of the year that it will help Guizhou cultivate strategic emerging sectors and accelerate the construction of bases for NEV power cell and related material research.

"By 2025, we will strive to achieve a total output of 100 billion yuan in the NEV and related material sectors, and build Guiyang and Guian into China's most influential research and manufacturing bases in this area," said Shi Song, deputy director of the Guiyang bureau of investment promotion.
