In recent years, Guiyang City and Gui'an New Area have prioritized the seed industry as a critical pillar of agricultural modernization. By accelerating the development of a modern, full-chain seed industry system, Guiyang and Gui'an are ensuring high-quality seeds can take root in mountainous terrains.
At the 2026 China Seed Congress held in Hainan from March 27 to 31, Guizhou Zhunong High-Tech Seed Industry Co showcased its series of self-developed, high-quality rice varieties, which became a highlight of the event.
The company engages in R&D, breeding, production, and the import and export of new rice, corn, and vegetable varieties. After years of intensive cultivation, it has become Guizhou's first national-level integrated "breeding-multiplication-promotion" rice enterprise. Its independently created and cloned rice short-stalk gene, sdlr5, has been granted a national invention patent, solving a long-standing industry challenge of achieving high and stable yields.
The sdlr5 gene delivers a dual breakthrough in lodging resistance and high quality/high yield. By reducing the height of the rice plant, the gene creates thick, sturdy stalks that reduce the risk of falling over while fully retaining superior agronomic traits.
Today, more than 20 of the company's new hybrid rice varieties have received national and provincial approvals. Its sales network covers major rice-growing regions across China, and since 2024, its seeds have been exported to international markets such as Pakistan, Vietnam, India, and Bangladesh.
