A launch ceremony for the 2021 Guiyang rural rejuvenation event was held on June 9 at Chetian village's cultural plaza in Guian New Area, Southwest China's Guizhou province.
Lasting from May to September, the activities are being held by the Guiyang bureau of agriculture and rural affairs and the Guiyang bureau of sports. They aim to consolidate the achievements made during the poverty alleviation process, highlight rural characteristics, and boost people's physical activity.
Four themed activities that center on ethnic performances, red revolutions, basketball games and fruit and vegetable harvests will take place in Guian New Area, Huaxi county and Xiuwen county, with an estimated total audience of 100,000.
Marvelous dances and plays from the Miao ethnic group were performed by local residents and sports lovers during the launch ceremony, including the "iron chain dance", which is dubbed a traditional sport and has been included in the fifth batch of Guizhou's intangible cultural heritage item list.
The "iron chain dance" is a highly expressive stage performance, and has been officially part of schools' PE lessons since 2003.
