Harvest season recently arrived on an asparagus plantation in Xin'an village, Gaopo township, Huaxi district, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province.
Xin'an village is located in a high mountainous area and has a cold climate. Asparagus, known as the "king of vegetables", is very suited to the unique climate and soil of the village.
Xin'an village first began growing asparagus in 2017 with strong support from Huaxi district's veteran cadre bureau.
Before the development of the asparagus industry, most villagers grew corn and rice, which produced few economic benefits.
The village's asparagus plantation saw its first bumper harvest this year. By the beginning of May, the village had sold about 2,000 kilograms of asparagus bringing in more than 17,000 yuan ($108,800) in net profits.
"Surplus labor in the village is helping pick and plant asparagus under the unified arrangement of the cooperative, and the per capita monthly income is about 2,600 yuan. Next, we plan to continue to expand the asparagus planting area and help more villagers increase their incomes," said Mo Mingwu, Party branch secretary of Xin'an village.
In recent years, Huaxi district has insisted on adjusting the agricultural industrial structure and making it the top priority of agricultural and rural work, focusing on maximizing ecological, economic, social, and tourism value and steadily advancing the agricultural industrial revolution.
In addition, the district has established a technical service team to offer technical guidance to farmers and has hired experienced and professional agricultural experts and agrotechnical personnel to provide training and guidance.
