Southwest China's Guizhou province is reported to be speeding up the transformation and upgrade of its traditional industries, including the coal chemical industry and the phosphate chemical industry.

It is also pushing to develop a world-class phosphate and coal chemical industry base, relying on its rich phosphate and coal resources.

Leading companies are progressively optimizing the province's industrial structure through technological innovation, upgrades to the existing phosphate compound fertilizer industry and the continued development of fine phosphates.

In order to minimize the environmental risks caused by the buildup of phosphogypsum – the calcium sulfate hydrate formed as a by-product of the production of fertilizer from phosphate rock – the province is developing alternate uses for it.

After two years, Guizhou has achieved good results, especially in the development and production of phosphogypsum building materials and the new high-quality products have sparked keen demand, with production capacity taking off.

As a result, further efforts are being made to promote the use of phosphogypsum building materials.

In addition, the coal industry in Guizhou is actively adopting eco-friendly technologies, strengthening controls and management and improving overall safety levels.

Under the development goals outlined by the Guizhou Coal Chemical Industry Development Plan (2019-2025), there will be major advances.

It projects that by 2025, the province's coal chemical industry waste water, exhaust gas and solid waste will be comprehensively treated and recycled, and discharges will be up to industry standards.
