Updated: 2019-11-27

Hongyun community in Baiyun district, in Guizhou province, organized a series of activities on Nov 26 teaching seniors how best to take care of themselves, local officials said.

Early in the morning, the Lantian Day Care Center for the Elderly was reportedly ringing with laughter, as volunteers warmly received a group of senior residents coming to take part in the activities there.

A group of doctors from community hospitals were invited to offer free medical advice to the seniors.

Doctors answered their questions and shared with them some useful tips on how to keep healthy using traditional Chinese medicine.

They also explained to them the importance of taking physical examinations and encouraged them to form positive attitudes towards life and develop healthy living habits.

The elderly people expressed hopes for more participation in such activities in future, so that they could have more things to do instead of staying alone at home.

Meanwhile, Hongyun community also held a party for the empty-nest elderly and those aged above 65 years old.

Officials said the event provided a platform for the government to learn about the needs of seniors and build a good relationship with the community.

During the activity, community volunteers offered them milk, fruit and desserts and organized games for them to get to know each other.

In addition, the community organized for more than 10 seniors to take part in environmental protection activities.

Wearing volunteer armbands, the seniors collected refuse and persuaded peddlers not to damage public facilities or do harm to the environment.

The community also organized volunteers to provide a regular hair grooming service for seniors and provide free physical examinations every year for those above 65 years old.
