Southwest China's Dashandong community has beefed up measures to provide more compassionate support to families whose only child has died or become disabled, according to local officials.
The community, in Baiyun district in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, has created special health records for such families, with the family address, revenue and contact information on record.
The community officials have also formulated measures to assist them.
Each of the families can have three people to help, including a community leader and two working staff.
So far, more than 17,000 yuan ($2,414) has been granted to the effected families while another 10,000 yuan has been given to two families whose members suffered critical illness.
They were also given a support card, on which helpers' names and telephone numbers are printed so they can ask for assistance when encountering hardship.
The community has set up a voluntary service team composed of family planning committee members, staff from community health service centers as well as kind-hearted volunteers from all walks of life.
They've provided five free consultations, held free hairdressing activities and given health lectures.
In addition, Dashandong community organized a recreation group named "golden year".
The community organizes activities and purchases professional audios, USB flash disks and other devices, aiming to provide a platform for the people it is helping to make easy contact.
They have also held activities such as reading, chess matches and calligraphy sessions, relying on the university to help out the elderly.
